In this blog post, we will cover everything from debugging to installing Linux distros to configuring your graphics card drivers. This article should give you a detailed understanding of how to set up an External Graphics Processing Unit (eGPU) and prepare it for use in an iMac. After reading this article, I hope that you will feel confident and prepared when it comes time for your purchase or build. If you have any questions or need help with anything along the way, leave a comment and I'll be happy to help! To get started, we need something to connect our eGPU case with our iMac... I decided to use a Thunderbolt 3 to USB-C adapter on my Mac, which was made by MyCharge. This is a no-frills adapter, and will support anything from a single display through three displays. Unlike most other adapters on the market, this one does not have a USB A port, so you will have to get an eGPU that supports Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB-A. The second thing we'll need for an eGPU is a power supply. This is essential for your eGPU setup to work or anything else with an iMac. You can go with any power supply from inside the box of an iMac, or get something from Amazon or Ebay. I suggest something from Sapphire, they make great products and have been around for a very long time. In case you don't already know, you will need an eGPU that is a minimum of 600W to power your setup. Anything less won't work! You can go a little more expensive if you want a few more Watts to power your eGPU, but I do not advise going over 750W. You will also need an eGPU enclosure with an outer case, there are many cases on the market, but I recommend the RIVA Series Box as it's offers good cable management and looks nice as well as being built quite solidly. If you're not looking to spend a lot on your build, there's also this one from Vantec (Review) (Amazon): There are a lot of other cases on the market as well, but these are some of the higher quality ones that I know of. If you're still not sure about buying an enclosure, I recommend using this Motherboard. It's inexpensive and easy to install your graphics card into it and then put that into your enclosure and connect all the cables and power connectors. If you're planning to use your eGPU for gaming, you will need a good graphics card, I'd recommend getting the new GTX 1080 Ti from Nvidia. A few days ago they released a version of it designed specifically for the eGPU market. cfa1e77820
